At Voyager we use natural water processed decaf methods like Swiss Water and Mountain Water. Both processes are considered to be natural and environmentally friendly methods of decaffeination, as they use only water and filters to remove caffeine, without any added chemicals. The resulting decaf coffee retains much of the original flavour and aroma of the coffee beans.
To accomplish this green coffee beans are soaked in hot water to dissolve the caffeine and other soluble compounds. The water is then passed through an activated carbon filter or similar that removes the caffeine but leaves the other compounds in the water. The filtered water, which now contains the soluble compounds but no caffeine, is then used to soak a new batch of beans. The process is repeated until the desired level of decaffeination is achieved which usually falls below 1% of the original caffeine content.
